Edinburgh's newest hotel (Village Urban Resort) road tested

Hi, Yvonne and I tried out Edinburgh's newest hotel during a 3 night stay. To sample the best the Village Urban Resort had to offer we booked one of their upgrade rooms branded as upper deck. This give you a bigger room, better bedding, full sky package including films and sport, a Bose soundlink docking station and starbucks drinks package in the room. We were absolutely delighted with the room facilities and enjoyed the luxury of all the little extras.

We booked one of the hotels getaway packages which gives you dinner on the 1st night as well as bed and breakfast on the other nights.

The hotel has a fully equipped leisure centre and Spa and I've got to say the gym was the biggest and best equipped gym i've encountered in any UK hotel and being brand new everything was in perfect working order.

The staff were all very attentive although the recently opened status did lead to a few teething problems and unfortunately the restaurant has a fair bit to go to get to the required standard. Breakfast was crowded on the Saturday morning which led to queues forming around the far too cramped buffet stations. The worst however was the experience at dinner. We ate in the restaurant on two seperate evenings and on both occassions the food was served lukewarm and one of the evenings they also got the order wrong. The problems were clearly getting to the restaurant and bar staff and for some this resulted in a less than customer friendly attitude.

The leisure facilities however managed to cope with the high volume of customers and this all operated efficiently.

Overall I would rate this hotel as reasonable but with obvious room for improvement, its located a couple of miles out of town but buses to town are nearby and frequent and at £1.50 per journey very reasonable. We will probably return for future visits to Scotlands capital city but will expect some improvements particularly around the bar and restaurant operation.

overall my personal rating based on this trip would be 7 out of 10
