Hard to find and hard to leave -Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa, Dundee

Yvonne and I stayed at the Apex hotel in Dundee for a pre birthday two night weekend leisure break. Unusually for us we booked room only with the intention of either adding breakfast on arrival or if within walking distance we would walk into town and eat breakfast in a cafe.

The first impression of the hotel, which is situated in the city harbour area was none too positive. From the outside the hotel looks soulless and rather absent of architectural merit. Inside however we were greeted with a rather different view. The inside is contemporary, bright, spacious and sociable.

We arrived at reception and were checked in by a very pleasant receptionist. Our room was located on the top floor with a view out over the quay and onto the historical HMS Unicorn frigate moored in the dock and now a floating museum I believe. One very nice touch in our room was a birthday card, birthday message and a couple of squares of tablet set out on the bed on arrival a nice personal touch which was much appreciated. The room was nicely decorated, quite spacious and equipped with all the usual suspects and had been stocked with elemetis toiletries and bottled water.

The hotel rated 4 star by the AA had a leisure suite with swimming pool, two jacuzzi hot tubs, sauna, steam room and a gym. All facilities were open, well maintained and pretty modern. The hotel also offered spa treatments but we didn't try these this time.

The hotel turned out to be ideally located for the city centre which was a mere 5-10 minute walk which allowed us to leave the car in the free car park and stroll into town for breakfast and dinner so we didn't try the hotel food. We did have a few drinks in the bar area and these were very pleasant in a nice lounge area and for cocktails and soft drinks were reasonably priced.

All in all a nice break in a good hotel. Decor and room facilities were good, the leisure facilities great and free parking. Nothing much on the bad front and nothing that particularly irked me during the stay.

Yvonne and I debated the rating in the end we agreed (code for she won!) we would rate this hotel 9 out of 10. It's a good standard 4 star with helpful staff. Not quite best in class but much nearer top of class than other 4 stars we have visited.
